Pavlos Kassomenos is a Professor of Environmental Physics and Air Pollution at the Physics Department of the University of Ioannina in Northwestern Greece. His research interests focus on Air Pollution and its impacts to human health and the environment. He taught air pollution at the Technical University of Crete, Chania, Greece between 1999 and 2000 and joined the Physics Department of the University of Ioannina in 2000. In 2004-2005, during his first sabbatical leave, he worked at the University of Birmingham, School of Geography and the Environment (UK). In 2009-2010, during his second sabbatical leave, he collaborated with the School of Public health at Kingʼs College in London (UK) and the Environment Institute at the Joint Research Center of the European Union in ISPRA (Italy). Since 2009 he coordinates the air pollution division of the masterʼs degree “Waste management” of the Greek Open University.
Since 1988 he has authored over 450 communications (book chapters, refereed conference papers, project reports), including 180 peer-reviewed journal papers in the aspects of air pollution, environmental pollution, climate research and the health impacts of air pollution and meteorology. His research has been funded among others by the European Union, DG-JRC, Interreg, NSRF, Greek Ministry of Environment and Education, Public Power Corporation and a number of private companies.
